RACE DETAILS
The Super Jock ‘n Jill / New Balance Winter Grand Prix presented by Club Northwest has introduced various forms of entertainment (competition) into our series over the years. This year, we’re going to have fun as well.
December 6 Cross Country Race
Giving Thanks
It’s just after Thanksgiving and we hope you'll be in the giving spirit! We will give you $1 off your series entry fee or single race entry for each canned food item you bring for Northwest Harvest! (Limited to five items maximum for the series entry fee.)
December 20 Road Run
Spirit of the Season
It’s just before Christmas, and we’ll be in the giving spirit, so be ready for anything. We will have some special random prizes from our sponsors!
January 10 Cross Country Race
High School Alumni Day!
Our high school alumni competition! Do you have eligibilty?! You bet! If you run for a school or ran for a school, work or worked at a school, are currently parenting or parented at a school, or live in that school's attendance area, you are on the team. When you fill out your card at the finish line, declare your alumni affiliation. But, for that true school spirit, you should concentrate on alumni and current team members.
Using reverse cross country scoring, we give:
1st 20
2nd 18
3rd 16
4th 14
5th 12
6th 10
7th 9
8th 8
9th 7
10th 6
11th 5
12th 4
13th 3
14th 2
15th-on 1
1 point for each runner
Everybody who signs up for a school gets a point. Participation is the key, and you can win without top finishers if your school has enough current runner and alumni runner support. Announcements and recognition to follow in an upcoming Grand Prix News!
We will again have a special deeply-discounted fee for schools who wish to enter as many current and former athletes as they want for this race only! (Runners who wish to contest for series' przes must still register for the series.)
January 24 Road Run
Prediction Time Event!
Predict your time on our flat, double-loop course! There will be special prizes for the people who come closest to their predicted time without receiving any assistance – no watches, no sundials (lots of luck there anyway in a January race!), no calendars, no covert signals or more-than-encouraging remarks from the sidelines! The clock will be at the accurate half-mile point, and will be shut off for lap two (and will not be at the finish).
The prediction sheet will be at registration -- just stop by and put your race number, name, and predicted time in the appropriate places! You do not have to predict a time to run, but you do have to predict a time to win this special contest! And, yes, you have to make that prediction before we start the event!
February 7 Track Race
Run hard and keep turning left!
The two-mile track event at Nathan Hale High School will be run in heats according to your pace, so remember to sign the heat sheet when you arrive. The “fast” heat will be the only one with a set time, and is usually first. The other heats will be scheduled based on pace and/or the number of people running. Please check in and sign a heat sheet when you arrive. A preliminary heat schedule will be presented at the second road race and posted on
www.superjocknjill.com and
www.clubnorthwest.org. We reserve the right to change start times and consolidate heats! Just run hard and keep making left turns.
We will repeat a tee-shirt extravaganza again this year! Some great oldies were in attendance last year. Classic Grand Prix tee-shirts will be available for purchase, really cheap! Awards will be presented to the oldest race tee-shirt (must be worn, not carried in a plastic bag, and must have a clear date on it!)
February 21 Road Run
The Finale – Our Time Handicapped Event!
This is our Time-Handicapped Finale! Your start time is based on your previous race times. If you have a slower seed time, you get a head start! If you’re fast, you start closer to the “scratch” time (last off the line). This is a chance for someone new to be at the front and lead a race, and for most of you to chase folks down. Hold on and don’t get swallowed up by the pack. If handicapped correctly, everyone should reach the finish line at the same time.
Please – everyone check in at the picnic shelter. Find out who your starter is, what your start group is, and when to get to the start line on time! Single race entrants will start from “scratch” with all of the fast people and get to really be involved in the chase. The countdown clock will start at the time of the first starter, and count down to zero for the scratch start. It will then immediately begin to count up as if everyone started with the scratch!
Join us immediately afterwards at the nearby Sand Point Park community center for awards and food. Awards will be presented to our top three finishers in each age group and the Love Handles division. The top three division finishers will be treated to pizza and soft drinks for FREE. Spectators and others will be charged by the slice to help us cover costs.
SERIES SCORING
All finishers will receive a card at the finish line of each race. Return that card to the registration area with your name, division (age/sex), and race number immediately after your race, so we can calculate scores. If you have signed up as a single-race entrant, your division is “single.” Everyone needs to turn in their card so we can produce overall race results.
Points will be awarded to Grand Prix participants in each division based on your place of finish
1st 10
2nd 8
3rd 7
4th 6
5th 5
6th 4
7th 3
8th 2
9th and all other finishers 1
You must finish a minimum of four (4) races to qualify for series' division awards. We take your best four (4) of six (6) races for total points and awards.
Single race entrants don't score Grand Prix points. You run for personal glory and 'attaboys.' Again this year, we will calculate overall CLUB scoring for PNTF running clubs, with a big club trophy for the winner! Club Northwest won the inaugural event last year.
RESULTS
SERIES NUMBERS
Once you are assigned a Grand Prix Series number, keep it for the entire series. We can provide storage for your number so you won't lose it or forget it at home. If you retain your number between race, then lose it and need to have a new one assigned, you will be charged $2 penalty. Single-race race numbers will be assigned at each event.
LOVE HANDLES DIVISION
A special award will go to series participants who are more pear-shaped than stick figure, and need at least one “X” on his/her apparel tag. Minimum weights for awards are 220 pounds for men and 150 pounds for women. Challenges will be met by the "scale test!"
PROTESTS
Protests or corrections to scoring must be brought to the attention of one of The Five Stooges (co-directors and founders) prior to the next race day, either verbally or by e-mail to
info@promotionevents.com. Protests will be heard by the Stooges as a group, and decisions written on brightly-colored paper with a red Sharpie and posted on at least one tree within the park. Remember – we reserve the right to screw up every now and then.
DIRECTIONS AND LOCATIONS
To the park: Again this year, five of our six races this year will be at Magnuson Park/Sand Point in northeast Seattle. From I-5 northbound, take the NE 45th Street exit, go east all the way until NE 45th becomes Sand Point Way NE, and follow Sand Point Way to the park entrance at Northeast 65th Street. From I-5 southbound, take the NE 145th Street exit and go east to Lake City Way. Turn south on Lake City Way and turn left on 35th Avenue NE. Follow 35th to NE 125th Street, and turn left. NE 125th becomes Sand Point Way NE, and you will follow Sand Point Way to the park entrance at NE 65th Street.
Inside the park: From either direction, after turning east into the Park's south entrance at NE 65th Street (NOTE: it is much easier to use the entrance at NE 65th for this year's locations than to use the north entrance at NE 74th Street), go all the way down into the park. Make the left turn at the point where you can go right, straight, or left, and go straight through the next intersection. Registration for all five races in the Park will be at Shelter #2, closest shelter to the parking lot for Kite Hill. Starts and finishes for all five races will be in that area as well.
Cross country races start on the field adjacent to the observation tower and finish near shelter #2. Courses are basically flat with one uphill over Kite Hill on each of two 1500-meter loops. See our race course
