Meeting Minutes

February 12, 2007

 

Attendance:  Board

Bill Roe, Phil Finger, Nick Fleming, Regina Joyce, Shelley Neal, Tony Robinson and Tony Young.  Making a momentary appearance to provide pizza was T.P..

 

Guests:

Mark Alexander, Tom Cotner, Erika Daligcon, Lance Giles, Becca Gillespy, Scott McCoubrey and Aretha Thurmond.

 

Contractors:

Chuck Bartlett and Brian Oster.

Minutes:  Phil Finger

Regina Joyce moved that the January meeting minutes be approved as amended and it was seconded by Tony Young.  Motion passed.

 

Financial Report:  Bill Roe

All of the CNW bank accounts are being moved to Bank of America.  There is a check in the amount of $4,737 coming from Martin Rudow for Northwest Runner magazine.  Club Northwest continues to remain healthy financially.

 

Northwest Runner Report:  Bill Roe

Martin Rudow fell recently and collapsed a lung.  He is currently recuperating at home with double pneumonia.  Magazine revenue is way up due to format change with the addition of color.

 

Team:  Chuck Bartlett and Shelley Neal

     We have a lot of runners participating in indoor races.  Athletes have been selected for                                        CNW sponsorship but we do have some positions open. 

 

     The Self-Esteem Through Athletics (SETA) agreement between Club Northwest and Lance Giles was discussed.  Bill Roe made a motion to accept the agreement in principle and provide transportation funding for Lance Giles and three athletes to the National Scholastic Meet at the 168th Street Armory in New York..  Motion was seconded by Tony Young and then passed by the board.

 

      The 2007 USA Cross Country Championships were held on February 10th in Boulder, Colorado.  Bill was there, but did not see any orange and blue.

 

 

Events:  Brian Oster

     The Love Them or Leave Them run on February 10th had 1,230 registrants with 1,100 finishers.  The Winter Grand Prix finale will be at Magnuson Park on February 17th and this year’s series  is having a phenomenal registration.

 

     The 2007 All Comers track meets will be held at West Seattle stadium due to the unavailability of Shoreline or Edmonds/Woodway facilities.  We plan to add the Steeple Chase and the Hammer Throw to the events offered.  The first meet will be Wednesday, May 30, 2007.  There are two dates (last Wednesday in July and first Wednesday in August) where work will be performed on the facility and it will not be available to us:  we are looking at Sealth/SW Recreation Center as an alternative for those dates.  Rental fees will be substantially higher this year.

 

New Business:

     Many board members and several invited guests attended a pre-meeting concerning bolstering the CNW team, particularly in track & field.  Aretha Thurmond will strongly consider the “Washington Elite” group move to CNW by the outdoor season.  Lance Giles had a very strong contingent at the UW meet over the past weekend.  Bill took down the notes and will share them with everyone.  Members of the board expressed excitement over the developments and potential for the future.

 

     Tom Cotner indicated that the University of Washington was inquiring to see if Club Northwest would sponsor a High School indoor track meet at the UW on March 3, 2007.  Bill Roe made a motion that CNW sponsor the event which was seconded by Phil Finger.

The motion carried.

 

     Nominations for the CNW Board member positions opening up were discussed.  Those are the #7, #8 and #9  positions, plus the two years remaining on position #6 vacated by Steve Hatzenbeler.  Thornton Perry and Phil Finger are declining to run again, but Tony Young would like to continue service..  All of these positions will be open in March at the Annual Meeting.  Individuals nominated for consideration were Lance Giles, Becca Gillespy, Regina Joyce, John O’Hearn and Aretha Thurmond.  Additional nominations may be made at the meeting.  We also have the three-at-large seats to fill if the new Board chooses.  Nick Fleming was asked to think about becoming  President and Saul Kinderis to think about becoming Vice President.  Voting on the nominations will be done at the March, 2007 meeting.

 

The move to adjourn was made by Phil Finger and seconded by Tony Robinson.  The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m..
