February 12-13 2005 CNW Results
National Cross Country 8K Championships,
Vancouver WA MASTERS WOMEN
4) Kelly Kruell 33:48 Silver medal in 45-49 age group. She was 2nd
to the overall winner Carmen Ayala Troncoso. Also finished ahead of
2 women who beat her at the XC championships last December.
Conditions on the course were poor, especially in some deep muddy
areas on the southwest end of the course, but she ran very tough and
held place over the final 3 2K loops.
Indoor track, University of Washington
Tony Young set the American masters best in the 3000m, running
8:17.69. This is the 3rd time Tony has set an American record or
best at 3K. The old record was 8:20 set by Brian Pope 2 weeks ago.
Tony moved strongly over the final 800m, covering that distance in
4:11.
Heat 2, Saturday
8) Tony Young 8:17.69
Kyle Smits ran a seasonal best in the 3K in heat 3 on Saturday, as
he finished in 8:35.48. Kyle was in a huge heat and had difficulty
gaining position. He finally was able to slip around a couple of
runners and charged over the final 250 meters to kick down 6
runners, finishing in 12th out of 20 runners.
Sarah Leonard, and masters runner Karen Steen ran the mile,
finishing in 5:07.27 and 5:09.89, respectively. It was the first
time either had run the mile this year. It was a masters best for
Karen. Both races had very big fields, with Karen forced to run in
lane 2 for 3 laps, being boxed in by 3-5 runners who ran as a clot
in lane 3! Sarah had no such trouble, as she was simply much faster
than almost everyone in her heat.
Paul Mach had a super race in themile as he set a 6 second PR, to
finish in 3rd. Paul ran in 5th –8th place in the early going of a
very large field, extricating himself out of 3 different boxes
during the race. He moved strongly over the final 200m, to grab 3rd
and almost catch the 2nd place runner.
Heat 1, Sunday
3) Paul Mach 4:15.61
Tony and Sarah also raced the 800 on Sunday, and both finished 2nd.
Sarah ran in 5th for a lot of the race, moving into 2nd on the final
home stretch. Tony led the entire way but was outleaned at the tape,
losing by 0.07 seconds.
Heats 1, Sunday
2) Tony Young 1:56.55
2) Sarah Leonard 2:20.33
Masters runner John O'Hearn had a big surprise when they rearranged
the heats in Sunday's 3K. He was moved from heat 4 to heat 1!! He
managed to stay in contact for 3 laps, going through the 1K in 3:00,
then ran a very strong solo race to finish in a masters PR of
9:22.82, a 5 second PR.
Bryan Burdo had a strong seasonal debut as he finished in 5:00.83 in
the mile. Bryan is in the 45-49 age group, so this was a very
promising start.
Ryan Dirks finished 2nd against a pretty deep field in the men's
weight throw, with a throw of 61-8. The weight throw is what many
hammer throwers compete in during the indoor season.
