XC Team Selection Criteria
CNW will select 7 open men and 7 open women for
participation in the USATF Club XC Championships in Rochester,
NY. In order to be considered for one of the spots on the CNW
XC Nationals team traveling from November 17 through 20, 2005,
athletes must meet the following criteria (see note below
regarding at-large selections):
1. Be a CNW and USATF member prior to the PNTF meet at Lower
Woodland Park.
2. Identify him/herself to the Team Manager prior to
competing in any one of the selection races.
**Note: Most events have an entry deadline about a
week prior to race day, so please make every attempt to tell the
Team Manager you intend to run at least one week prior to the
event.
3. Compete in at least two of the selection races /smaller>/color>/fontfamily>--
PNTF and one of the other two.
4. Provide a volunteer to help organize, set up, monitor,
etc. at the PNTF meet at Lower Woodland. The volunteer's name
and contact information must be provided to the Team Manager by
the Wednesday prior to the meet.
Team selection:
The top 5 open men and women will be selected on a points
system. All athletes who have met criteria 1 and 2 above will
be scored in each of the selection races. The top finisher in
each race will be awarded the number of points that is the
inverse of the number of athletes in the race meeting the
criteria (in other words, if there are 9 competing, the top CNW
finisher will earn 9 points, the second place CNW finisher will
earn 8, on down to the ninth finisher, who will earn 1 point).
After the final selection race, the best two scores for each
athlete meeting criteria 1-4 above will be tallied, and the top
5 scorers will be offered spots on the traveling team to the
National Championships. If any of the top 5 scorers are unable
to go to Nationals, the sixth highest scorer will be invited,
then the seventh, etc. The PNTF meet counts for double the
other meets. A master’s athlete finishing in the top 5 in the
open group may choose to use the full funding for either the
open race or masters race at nationals.
At-large selection:
At the Team Manager's and CNW Board of Directors'
discretion, two male and two female athletes may be selected to
fill the remaining spots on the CNW XC Nationals team. On the
Monday following the final selection race, the Team Manager will
make a recommendation to the board (via e-mail) regarding which
athletes should be selected for the final two spots on each
team. The Team Manager should present recommendations with an
explanation of what makes each athlete a good choice. Any
athlete considered for at-large selection is exempt from
Criteria 1-4 above; however, the athlete must be a member of CNW
prior to being awarded an at-large position on the nationals
team.
Special note regarding team selection:
CNW will make every attempt to /smaller>/color>/fontfamily>send
a high caliber team to the National Championships. However, in
the event that there are not at least seven men and seven women
who can fill the team based on the above selection criteria, a
smaller team will travel.
Selection races:
An athlete must compete in at least two races -- PNTF and
one of the other two. The PNTF score will be doubled. The best
of the other two meets (if the athlete competes in both) will be
scored.
All athletes, PNTF 11/06/05, and
Washington athletes, one of these two:
-- Sundodger Classic 9/17/05
-- WWU Invite 10/8/05
Oregon athletes may substitute the following meets in lieu of
the Washington meets (Sundodger, WWU) with:
-- Williamette 10/01/05
-- Clackamas 10/15/05
