Elmore, King dominate at USATF Northwest Regional; Club Northwest women and Team XO men take team titles Seattle, November 6, 2005 Dominating performances in the men’s and women’s races highlighted a perfect fall day of cross country, which otherwise featured brisk competition at the USATF Northwest Regional Cross Country Championships on Sunday. Malindi Elmore, a 2004 Olympian from Canada, and Team XO’s Max King raced to convincing wins as they shattered the course records on the challenging 2000m loop course in Woodland Park . Elmore looked invincible as she sped over the 6000m to a course record time of 20:47, while King pulled away quickly to run unchallenged in the 10,000m, finishing in 31:06, a course record by 80 seconds. Elmore took the lead in the first 800m and never looked back as she shattered the course record of 22:27, set last year by the Seattle Running Club (SRC)’s Alysun Deckert. Suzanne Binne-Huse of the Mountain West Track Club moved strongly over the final 2K loop to take 2nd as she also bettered the course record, finishing in 21:52. Sarna Becker of Club Northwest (CNW) ran 22:09 for 3rd. The race also served as the Pacific Northwest Assocation (PNTF) Championship, and Becker claimed the PNTF title. Becker lead her CNW team to the team title, helped by strong finishes by teammates Lauren Matthews (6th), Jodee Adams-Moore (7th), Megan Johnson (9th), and Rachel Brewer (10th) as they defeated SRC 25-33. SRC had strong top 10 finishes by Gwen Greiner (4th), Meg Busse (5th) and Jennifer Tonkin (8th), but it was not enough to offset CNW’s depth. King lead by 400m and pulled steadily ahead to a comfortable lead by the first kilometer. He attacked the hills and continued to pull away, winning handily as he bettered the old course record of 32:26, set last year by SRC’s Uli Steidl. King was followed by teammate Dan McLean, who mounted a strong charge over the final 3000m to finish in 31:47, and Steidl, who took the PNTF title, finishing in 32:18. Other strong top 10 finishes by Team XO included Ben Mangrum (5th), Jeremy Tolman (6th), and Destry Johnson (9th), which propelled Team XO to the team title over SRC and CNW. In the masters competition, CNW’s Tony Young won his 4th straight PNTF masters title, wnning by 33 seconds over teammate John O’Hearn. Regina Joyce of CNW pulled away from defending champion and CNW teammate Karen Steen to take the women’s title. CNW easily won both the men’s and women’s masters team titles as they swept the top 3 places in the men’s race and 4 of the top 5 places in the women’s race. Joyce won the women’s 45-49 age group, while CNW’s Michael Smith was the men’s 45-49 champion. CNW’s Mark Billett took the men’s 50-54 title, CNW’s Jim McGill took the men’s 55-59 title, while Phyllis Nelson of the Snohomish Track Club (STC) won the women’s 55-59 title. Roger Dean and STC’s Ben Grevstad captured the 65-69 and 70-74 age group titles.
